Subject: Re: Rig Run 05/15 Roster: REGISTERED

Gentlemen,

Please find below the crews that have been registered as of this morning for the Rig Run tomorrow. I'm sorry I won't be able to join you this weekend, but am sure you will have a great race and a great time together with the Hanohano family. Apply what we have been working on and most importantly, have fun. Open "Yellow" and Open "Green" there is a case of beer from the coach payable next Tuesday for whichever one of you two crosses the finish line first. (Dave Bloom, I will include cupcakes if your crew crosses the line first.)

Good luck and have fun. My thoughts will be with you Saturday.

Subject: On Crystal Pier: Expectations & Roster

Gentlemen,

The first race of the season is upon us, the Crystal Pier Race. Not only is it an opportunity to see where we are in our training, it is also an opportunity to show SCORA the strength of the Hanohano Ohana (say that five times fast) by hosting one of the best run race events of the season. The effort we have put into learning and applying our technique and the effort we as a club have put into hosting this race will be rewarded on Saturday and it will be obvious to the rest of SCORA what can be accomplished when members of Hanohano work together toward a common end.

Hosting the Crystal Pier race is a good metaphor for canoe paddling. No one person could carry out all that is involved in holding an event of this size by themselves. While there are definitely stand-out players (thank you Allison for doing a terrific job as race chair), the end result would not be the same if everyone did not work together, in coordinated effort, toward the same goal. And coordinated effort is necessary. Without everyone working in unison, redundancies would occur or important steps would be missed that would be detrimental to the overall success of the event. While no one could deny the effort or the positive intent, the end result would still be "less-than".

The same holds true for six-man outrigger canoe paddling. There is no room for individuality. We must be committed to a unified goal and a unified course of action. No one of us alone can force fit a positive result. By working with the grain, trusting in, understanding, and consistently applying the stroke we have all been trying so diligently to master, we will see positive results. If we place ourselves as individuals outside of that course of action, for whatever reason, our results will be "less-than". I apologize for the Aristotle quote, but in this case it holds true, "The whole is more than the sum of its parts." Work together, for each other, utilizing the same mechanics and technique. There are no heroes in the six man outrigger. The hero is the canoe who carries you. Respect her and work with her. Do not attempt to force your will upon her. Listen to her. She will tell you when to apply more pressure, when to increase the rate, and when to sit back and enjoy the ride. In working together in unison with the will of the canoe as our guide, we will avoid results that are "less-than".

Now would be a good time to talk about results and expectations. Through my spy network, I was able to uncover a snippet from one of the more dominate Mens programs in SCORA. In the email, one of the coaches states in regards to managing expectations for the first race:

"There are a lot of teams that come roaring out of the gates on that first race and try to put in a good showing, and have trained as if they are going into Ironman Champs this Saturday. Some of those teams that kick butt on the first Saturday never get any faster because they have reached their pinnacle on the first Saturday, we should be about 75-80 percent of our potential in this first week. We have to look at this race as a measure of what we have worked toward in our number one goal of being fast at Iron man champs. If we get lucky and win a division or two then we should be happy with that and get back to work to finish the next 2 cycles leading to Iron champs.

I seriously doubt any other team in SCORA has put in a 60 min piece in practice, let alone two in one day! I hope you go into the race confident that you paddled close to the equivalent of 4 races this week so the race should not be difficult to get through, but it is just the first step on a flight of stairs. Have fun."

This coach believes as I do in micro training cycles. If you look at our training schedule, you will see a count-down for each cycle on the left-hand side. Our first cycle ends this Saturday. The first cycle was about learning and applying "new" techniques, building a base, and learning what it feels like to go fast. How we finish Saturday will not be indicative of where we finish at the conclusion of the next micro-cycle, Iron Outrigger Champs. We too should only be at about 75-80% of our potential in this first week. Where and how we finish is a result of the type of training we have been doing and is not the culmination or pinnacle of our effort or our potential. It is indeed, "Just the first step in a flight of stairs".

Please find below the current roster for crews. I will be registering this roster electronically today. If for some reason you find that you are unable to race Saturday, please let me know so that we can find a replacement.

Subject: Crew Selection: UPDATE

For those of you that were unable to attend Saturday practice or have forgotten already, here's the latest from the 2010 "Hui Loko Maika'i" or the committee of equals for the first race. On Saturday we announced the Senior Master Crew. I think Da Hui did a nice job on putting that one together.

Mike Plunkett

Golden Senior Masters:

Jerry Franklin
John McKay
Marshal Parks
Mike Gaughan
Paul LaDesma

Remember the above seats are not safe or written in stone. The above crews will only be as fast as you push them to be. "Excuse me, you're in my seat." We should have the remaining crews finalized this week. Thanks everyone for your positive feedback. If you have not done so already, please let me know if you will not be attending either Crystal Pier or the Rig Run. Thanks.

If you have any questions on crew selection or 'Da Hui' please feel to call me @ 858.692.7611, email me, ask during warm-up at practice, or even better, over a barley soda after practice.

Subject: Crew Selection

Gentlemen,

Just wanted to again announce the first Open and first Age-group crews for those that were unable to attend practice last evening.

First Open:

Chris Hill
DJ Matias
John O'Connor
Lance Cummings
Landon Ross
Mike Plunkett

First Age-Group:
Golden Senior Masters:

Jerry Franklin
John McKay
Marshal Parks
Mike Gaughan
Paul LaDesma
Rich Hess

Remember the above seats are not safe or written in stone. The above crews will only be as fast as the rest of you push them to be. If you continue to stomp daylights out of them like you did last evening, they will either have to improve or move out of your way. "Excuse me, you're in my seat."

I will be forwarding suggestions to the 2010 "Hui Loko Maika'i" or the "committee of equals" sometime in the next week for the first two races (Crystal Pier May 8th & Rig Run May 15th). Four of the five men I have asked to be your representatives have agreed. I am waiting on a response from the last. If I do not hear from him this week I will assume he is not interested and 'Da Hui' will proceed as is, with four.

Open Men, please let me know if you will NOT be racing either or both of those two races. If I do not hear from you, I will assume you should be included on the roster for those two races. (Even if you have already told me, please remind me.) Thanks.

If you have any questions on crew selection or 'Da Hui' please feel to call me @ 858.692.7611, email me, ask during warm-up at practice, or even better, over a barley soda after practice. Since the only responses I have received so far were to set the remaining crews with the fastest crew first, then the next fastest, etc. I will assume that is the general consensus. If you have additional concerns, please let me know.

"Set up each stroke and everything else will follow."

Cheers,
-CH

Subject: 2010 Season

Aloha HanoHano,

First of all I want to apologize for sending this out so late. I am sure a lot of you have heard the rumor about me not coaching this year because I am moving to Hawaii. Yes, the rumor is true, I will not be coaching HH Men this year, and yes, I am moving back home to Hawaii. I have had a serious family situation come up, and I feel I need to be home with my family to handle this.

I want to Thank all of You for giving me the opportunity to coach you and to be a part of a TRULY GREAT PROGRAM and CLUB!!! I want to thank the board for the support they have given me the last two years, because with that support the men's program has and is making a name for itself. I want to thank coach Robin and her women's program for the support they have given the men the last two years, because this support has also allowed us to succeed. I want to thank Suzanne for asking me to be a part of HH, and in having the confidence in me to coach the HH men's program. I want to thank Chris Hill for making the the move with me to HH to coach, and for all the support you have given me and this great club, YOU MADE IT GREAT BUDDY, THANK YOU!!!!!

I know I will miss paddling and the camaraderie we shared on the water and beach together. I wish HH all the best in 2010 and in the future.

I look forward to seeing HH paddlers in Hawaii for any future Hawaii races.

Mahalo,
Scotty

Subject: Start of 2010 Season IMPORTANT INFO

Sorry for all the emails this morning gentlemen. Clearly it must be February. As I was reminded by Mary Kay's calendar of events at the all club meeting last night, the official start of the season is only a few short weeks away. I wanted to highlight a few important dates that will be coming-up this month and reiterate some of the plans for the season discussed during the 2009 HOCC Mens Season Wrap-up Meeting. (If you are reading on an iPhone, Blackberry, or other hand held, you may want to wait until you get home to your desktop. This may be a long one.)

Dates First

Wed Feb 10th 4:30pm RIGGING DAY at Fiesta Island
Sat Feb 27th 8am Mens OC1 FIT TEST (meet by N. Ingraham Bridge/Ski Beach)
Sun Feb 28th 10:30am New Paddler ORIENTATION at Santa Clara
Tues March 2nd 5:35pm First Mens Practice at Fiesta Island

Long Winded Stuff Next

You may remember from an 9/29/09 email:

'The focus of the 2010 season is 'CONSISTENCY'; consistency of participation, effort, and crews. The coaches (per popular request) would like to put core-groupings of crews together early in the season and allow those core-groupings to develop and improve together. Up until this point we have only been accountable to ourselves to learn the Hanohano Mens stroke and to improve our own fitness levels and paddling ability. Now, we will be accountable to others. We will be accountable to those in our crews. If we fall short, they fall short. We will need to be consistent in our participation and our effort in order elevate our crews. We will be charged with making a difference in any seat we sit in through positive effort and attitude. The fastest crew will only be as fast as the next fastest crew pushes them to be and that crew will only be as fast as the next crew pushes them to be and so on and so forth. Through consistent effort we will all actively participate in the success of the Hanohano Men's program.

Okay "nuts and bolts" time. There was some difference of opinion this [2009] season as to how crews were selected, should be selected, and how paddlers are "ranked". We are going to simplify all of it in 2010 and take some of the onus of ranking and crew selection away from the coaches and put it back on the rest of the paddlers. First, the Hanohano OC1 Fit Tests will serve as the sole ranking tool to separate paddlers into like-level groupings. In order to be considered for the "top crew" you will need to meet two criteria only: 1) Be Fit & 2) Paddle Like Us. The first will be found by using the fit test, the second will become apparent once the "top crew" begins to practice together [and is filmed together]. If you do not use the Hanohano Mens stroke and cannot match the powerband, the catch, the release, and the swing, you will stick out like a sore thumb compared to those that do and it will be felt in the powerband and the glide (or lack of glide). If a paddler is not fit and does not blend, he will not be considered for or remain in the "top crew".'

In addition, after looking at the roster and after considering the reports on who has been doing their homework and improving during the off-season (yes, I have my spies) it is apparent that we will have a significant amount of very talented paddlers in the 45+ range. At the season wrap-up meeting there was a general interest in participating in age-group divisions by those that attended. It is my personal opinion that spreading our 45+ talent over a senior crew, a golden crew, open crews, etc. may dilute it too much. We'd like to offer an alternative this season in the form of two "top crews". For those of you that would potentially be eligible for the first Open crew but would rather pursue age-group hardware and paddle with men of similar age, you will be given the opportunity to "try-out" for the top six spots in a Senior Master crew. As with the first Open crew, the expectation is that you will commit to practicing and racing with this crew through a majority of the Iron season (Crystal Pier, Rig Run, Kahnamoku Classic) in an attempt to dial the crew in before Iron Champs. In order to be considered for either the first Open crew or the first Senior Master crew, you must post a time during the Feb 27th OC1 Fit Test. If you are 45+ years of age, you may forgo consideration for the Open crew and "try-out" specifically for the Senior Master crew.

What about crew selection beyond these two crews? You may remember form the 9/29/09 email:

'Because there is an interest in running age-specific crews this coming year, we will be looking for common ages in each grouping. If a grouping is of a predominant age, that grouping will be used as a basis to try and build an age-group specific crew around. If there is too great a disparity in performance by age, we may not consider putting those paddlers into a crew together...

As stated above, crew selection will be taking a different direction in 2010. The coaches are proud to introduce the "Hui Loko Maika'i" or the "committee of equals". The Hui Loko Maika'i will be comprised of four club members and one coach who will ultimately be responsible for crew selection. Prior to race crew selection the coaches will develop a list of "suggested" crews to be handed to the Hui Loko Maika'i. 'Da Hui' will then take into consideration those factors that may have missed the coaches attention such as paddlers attitudes, paddlers desire (or lack of desire) to paddle a specific age group, work ethic during practices, how well certain paddlers paddle with others, etc... The Hui Loko Maika'i members will be determined by the coaches this first year and the four club members (as well as the participating coach) should remain anonymous. If da Hui is a success, it's selection will be made by secret ballot by the Hanohano Men for the 2011 season. While 'da Hui' will ultimately be responsible for [maintaining equality in]crew selection, the selection of the "top crew[s]" will remain solely in the hands of the coaches and will not be subject to rewrite.'

Again, anyone shooting for first Open or first Senior Master crew must post a time on the 27th. Everyone else is strongly encouraged to post a time as well, especially if you are concerned with seating placement. Remember, the OC1 test will be the sole ranking tool for athletes.

I have again attached the 2010 Hanohano Mens Practice Schedule. Please take special note of the 'Expectations of Paddlers' section. In brief, weeknight practices launch promptly at 5:35pm, crews will be responsible for moving their canoe to waters edge, Hanohano jerseys of any year or design should be worn to all practices, negativity is never acceptable, have respect for yourself, your crew, your club, and your canoe, actively participate in club functions, and finally (and most importantly) have fun.

And Finally, Paperwork Stuff

Please find attached a copy of the 2010 SCORA waiver. Please print, fill-out, and sign a copy. You may deliver these to Mike Plunkett or me at any of the club functions in February. Let's get these turned in ASAP to make Julie's job as painless as possible this season.

Hopefully everyone is hydrating and getting mentally and physically prepared for tomorrow; this is what we have been building towards gentlemen. Tomorrow we get to show everyone how far we’ve come. All the homework, all the stroke-work, all the physical and mental effort has been preparing us for Champs.

When you’re sitting in your racing canoes tomorrow, take confidence in yourself and your crew. Remember that together we go much faster than we do alone. Rely on each other and lend your strength to your brothers when they need it. Stay in your stroke, it’s the strongest, most efficient thing you can do. Wield your paddles together Hanohano; six bodies, one mind, one singular focus.

Work together, stay positive, and most importantly have fun.

Gentlemen,

I am planning on heading out for a light OC1 paddle tonight to test the hands and wrists. Nothing too exciting I'm afraid, but I would welcome company.

Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel: Launch out of the Bahia, sometime between 4:30 & 5:00pm.

Otherwise I assume I'll see everyone at practice tomorrow night.

Okay, we're back to work in the six-mans on Tuesday. Based on what we've seen so far this year, I have a few seat races in mind (as does Coach Scott) and we'll get those out of the way as quickly as possible. We have Avilla Beach this weekend, which is a super fun race and venue for those of you who haven't made-up your mind yet. And then the following week is Ironman Championships, the culmination of our efforts to date.

While the coaches understand that we all have family and work obligations, the more we are all present these next four practices, the better blend and unity we'll have going into Champs. And then it's time for the Hanohano Mens program to show who we are and what we can do. At the beginning of the season, we set Ironman Champs as the first of our seasonal goals and it is all almost upon us.

These next two weeks be present... be present at practice and be present in the moment of every stroke we take together. Every stroke counts. Continue to pursue perfection in each and every stroke.

Great job today. See you guys Tuesday.

Re: HH Men's Updates 06/14-21

Right now, Louis Dang and I are in for Sunday and Jack showed some interest.

We'll be launching at 7:30am from the La Jolla Shores kayak launch and anticipate being back on shore no later than 9:30am.

This promises to be a fun way to make-up for the miles lost on Saturday.

From Chris on 6/13/08:

Subject: HH Men's Updates 06/14-21

Here’s how the week lays out:

Saturday, June 14th

Fitness Test

We will run three heats at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 am.

Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your heat in order to set-up your canoe and check-in.

When you arrive please check in with Coach Scott. (He will be in the start/finish area by the stairs.)

Please inform Scotty of the make/color of the canoe you will be using to make it easier for spotting and recording of times.

The course consists of two laps and is just shy of 4 miles.

The course will mirror the course we ran last evening in the OC6.

The start line is between the stairs at Santa Clara and the twin pine trees on the far shore.

You will head straight for the closest (most Westerly) YELLOW SIGN BUOY and TURN LEFT on it.

After your turn you will head EAST toward the farthest (most Easterly) YELLOW SIGN BUOY and TURN LEFT on it.

You will ignore the first yellow buoy you come across and aim directly for the next WHITE 5mi/hr BUOY. You will stay to the RIGHT OF THIS BUOY (shore side/ Rivera Dr. side).

You will then STAY RIGHT OF ALL BUOYS (shore side/ Rivera Dr. side) until you reach the Swim Area in front of the beach on the North East corner of the bay.

You will TURN LEFT on the FIRST SWIM BUOY and REMAIN TO THE INSIDE (bayside/ west) OF ALL OF THE SWIM BUOYS.

You will aim for the series of 4 buoys just East of the Catamaran Hotel main building.

STAY TO THE OUTSIDE (right/ shore side) of this series of buoys TURNING SLIGHTLY LEFT on the LAST OF THESE BUOYS and heading WEST for the LAST BUOY in the line of 5mi/hr buoys.

TURN LEFT on the LAST BUOY (closest to Catamaran/ most northerly) and head SOUTH for the starting line area at Santa Clara Point staying to the RIGHT (shore side/ Santa Clara side) of the BUOY LINE.

You will complete this loop twice (for a total of two laps) and FINISH at the CORNER of the Santa Clara WALL (right before beach where we launch our canoes).

Jack and I will be arriving early Saturday morning to mark all the pertinent buoys described above with balloons. The color scheme will depend on what I am able to purchase this evening. Please arrive early enough for your heat so that you can be briefed on the course and course markings. Any need for course change will be determined by the coaches the morning of the fitness test.

Sunday, June 15th

Fathers Day La Jolla Shores OC1 Run

I have discussed with a few guys doing an early morning La Jolla shores run on Sunday on OC1s, surfskis, and OC2s.

I realize that those of you that are fathers or have fathers within driving distance may already have plans, but the last time we got together to do this run on a holiday we all had a great time.

If there is interest, I would anticipate a 7:30am launch time with pieces totaling an hour (give or take) on the way out upwind and however long it takes us to run back in down swell (2 hours tops).

Please let me know if you’re interested.

Tuesday & Thursday, June 17th & 19th

Seat Races

Seat Races for crew selection for the Ironman Outrigger Championships race will be held as needed on Tuesday or Thursday of next week. The format will be the same as the round earlier this season and we will be using the same course.

Open Men seat races will occur primarily on Tuesday and as needed on Thursday.

Novice Men seat races will occur on Thursday as needed (at the discretion of Coaches Scott & Gary).

Saturday, June 21st

Avila Beach Pineapple Express Race

While I have seen many hands raised at practice, I have not received definite confirmation from very many paddlers. Please confirm with Coach Scott or me on Saturday, or via email, if you have not already done so. We’d like to have an accurate head count for crew selection for this race. Thanks.

Good luck tomorrow, gentlemen. Let’s keep building toward the first of our seasonal goals, Ironman Champs.

We have had great momentum throughout the season and will soon be able to capitalize on all your hard work and effort at Champs.

So, let's tally this-up again and see if I've got this right:

2nd Place Bradley Novice Men

3rd Place Golden Senior Masters Men

1st Place Coed

Wow, another great showing at Ventura, Hanohano. We may not have traveled with numbers this week, but we made our presence felt just the same. I apologize for not making the trip, but because I'm a glutton for punishment, I just had to do the 25th running of the Bay 2 Bay. Let's add those results to this week's Hanohano tally:

1st Place OC2 McKay & McQuade

1st Place OC1 D. Jones

2nd / 3rd Place OC1 Parks & Dempsey (tie for 2nd)

4th Place OC1 J. Greeson

1st Place OC6 Hanohano (Louis, Lance, Jack, Bill, Aron, & Rob)

Great showing in Ventura and a great showing here in San Diego. You're really building on something here, Gentlemen.

Keep-up the hard work and great attitudes. As I've said before, you continue to impress me Hanohano.

Now, it's that time to see how we've progressed through the season, who's improved, who's done their homework, and who needs a reminder of how important homework is to our long-term goals. That's right it's Fitness Test time again.

We will be holding OC1 Fitness Tests this Saturday, June 14th at the Santa Clara Practice site. The new course is only two laps and is just shy of 4 miles in length, all flat water with no shallows or tight turns.

We will run 3 heats: 8am, 9:30am, and 11am. If you have your own canoe and are allowing others to use it, I would advise signing-up for the 8am heat leaving your canoe available for the next two heats. We're all friends now, so I will not be taking charge of lending-out canoes. If you have a canoe available the day of, please let it be known. If you are in need of a canoe, please keep you ears open and ask anyone willing to loan their OC1. (Buy them a beer or lunch as a thank you.)

Please email me at sixasone@notmail.com (SIX as ONE at HOTMAIL dot COM) and `Cc' Coach Scott at imuapaddler@yahoo.com (IMUA PADDLER at YAHOO dot COM) with your heat choices. The course should be wide enough that there should be no need for restriction on number of canoes per heat.

Also, there will be demo canoes available from Ocean Ohana for you to tool around on in between heats and while the other guys are testing. If there is something specific you wish to try, please contact Ocean Ohana. Chris OK or I will be available to answer questions on OC1's and equipment through the day.

See you at practice Tuesday and see you on the course Saturday. Again, congrats for your efforts this past weekend.

Is there anyone else who is not going to Ventura who wants to paddle this fun 20 mile race? Chances are we will be the only 6-man.

Aloha, everyone! First I want to say what a great day it was for HanoHano as a club. We showed everyone our great ohana and spirit, as well as brought home a substantial amount of trinkets (glassware)!

Chris' e-mail pretty much says it all. I would just like to add we definitely showed the potential we have as a group. We now need to step up, and reach that potential, and remember our goals at the start of the season. As Chris said, we run faster together than we do alone, sixasone. These next practices and races will give us that oppurtunity to reach our potential and goals as a group.

As Chris said, you continue to impress him. I would like to say, that is true for me as well, and add, that I, as well as Chris, in talking to him, you guys are what makes coaching not only fun and worthwhile, but, rewarding. Thank all of you for a great day Saturday!!!!

Okay Hanohano, let’s tally-up the day At Marina Del Rey:

3rd Bradley Novice Men
3rd Spec Novice Women
3rd 16 & under Boys
*And in a moral victory, the second Novice Men’s crew came in 5th Spec, just 30 seconds outside of a “mug” with a mighty-mite in the engine room and an injured steersman.

2nd Open Spec (2nd overall) Women
2nd Golden Senior Master Women
3rd Coed

3rd Master Men
4th Bradley Men
3rd Golden Senior Master Men
4th Golden Senior Master Men

That’s ten “medals” for the day and a solid placing in every division entered. (Advanced apologies if I missed anyone.)

While other clubs on the bay are giving speeches and sending emails about being unselfish and working hard for one another, you have quietly put those ideals into actions and proven that we run faster together than we do alone. Congratulations Hanohano; you continue to impress me.

Now that we have shown that we can place at will, it is time to get back to work fortifying the foundations to win, Hanohano Men. As evidenced yesterday, our program and our extended family has a bright future ahead of it. But that future will not come to fruition by resting on our laurels. It is time to rededicate ourselves to our brothers and recommit to our personal development as paddlers.

HH Open Men, be sure to mark the June 14th OC1 Fitness Test on your calendar and to continue to do your homework (cardio, cardio, cardio and what was it? Oh yeah… cardio.) Be aware that we will also be utilizing the next few weeks of practice to revisit the Hanohano Men’s Stroke. We will be discussing, demoing, filming, and driving it home until it is once again perfect. So it is imperative that while we are focusing on technique at practice, you are focusing on fitness the rest of the week. (Novice Men you will be joining us for most of the stroke work and are welcome to participate in this round of OC1 testing if you wish, but it will not be a determining factor in Novice crew selection.)

I apologize for the belated congratulations, but Chris OK and I stayed up in Marina through Sunday late in order to join the Marina locals for a late afternoon down-wind Dume run on OC1. Jack joined us and can confirm that it was a great time. We are trying to organize another downwind run with the Marina locals this coming Sunday (after Ventura) so that those wishing to participate can either stay the night in Ventura after the OC6 race and meet us in Malibu on Sunday, or come down and spend the night in Marina Del Rey after the race. It’s a down-swell surfing opportunity we don’t get too often in San Diego, so I would encourage any of you with OC1s to join us. But, fair warning for the novice OC1 paddler: please be aware that it can get hairy on big days. (Boats have been broken.) For more info contact Chris OK at Ocean Ohana.

As far as Ventura is concerned, as I understand it historically HH Men have fewer guys that attend than do not. So if you are planning on racing in Ventura, please email me at sixasone@hotmail.com (SIX AS ONE at HOTMAIL dot COM) and ‘Cc’ Coach Scott at imuapaddler@yahoo.com (IMUA PADDLER at YAHOO dot COM). (Please do not respond to the whole group to avoid excessive emails.) Also, please respond no later than Tuesday so that we have time to set coed crews with Robin and to practice with Men’s crew line-ups on Thursday. Thanks.

Again, Congratulations Hanohano! You’re proving that it really does mean “glorious, dignified, and worthy of praises”.

Mahalo for the good times,

Aloha Everyone,

First, I want to say thank you for helping HH put on a great race, and for taking all the canoes back over to our site. The men's presence was definitely felt and known.

As a coach, it was an awesome feeling to see so many HANOHANO canoes on the water. We had six men's crews, one co-ed, a novice men's crew, a novice co-ed, and a novice paddler race with another crew. It was also a very rewarding experience for me to see our canoes paddling hard with no quit in any of you till you crossed that finish line. I want to THANK ALL OF YOU for that feeling and experience I enjoyed on Saturday.

As a paddler, I wish I could have been out there battling on the water with you, I look forward to that opportunity.

This was the first step in our GOALS, that we set at the beginning of the season. We know what we just did and accomplished, now we go out and improve on it, the second step of our GOALS. Lets all work hard this week to prepare for Santa Barbara (Rig Run), and build on the improvement we have made since the start of the season.

I want to say once again Thank You Guys for a great race Saturday, see everyone at practice Tuesday.

This is very helpful. Hopefully a majority of the guys will take to heart some of the intel you've acquired through endurance racing trial and error.

And keep in mind gentlemen that now is the time to start experimenting. While we want to have the best race possible every race, our training schedule will have us "peaking" at Ironman Championships in June. It would be good to start experimenting and finding out what supplements, routines, and systems work best for you now so that you have it all figured out by then.

Thanks again D.
Don't overlook the importance of proper hydration and nutrition and the impact it will have on your performance, Hanohano.

From Donovan on 5/3/08:

Subject: Nutrition

Hi,

Most of you probably don't care or are set in your ways but for the people that would like some nutrition info read on. For 48 hours prior to the race you should be hydrating. That means 2-3 gallons of water per day. You can NOT drink straight water when hydrating, you will pee all your electrolytes out. I use NUUNS to mix with the water. Those electrolyte packs from emergen-C you get at the health food store are good as well. The official sport drinks (cytomax, accelerade, gu20, cliff products) are a little much for the hydrating phase of this. They have stuff in them that you do not need just to hydrate and they are a little more expensive. Anything with a lot of sugar, caffeine or HFCS is not recommended. When you get to a point where you need to pee every 20 minutes you are hydrated. Now you need to maintain that 20 minute schedule up until about 4 hours before the race. Of course while you are asleep you will not need to go as much because you are not active and your kidneys will go to sleep also. Plan on about 3 trips in the middle of the night.

The general rule that I use for pre race meals is to eat a lot of carbs 2 days before the race and a lot of protein the night before the race and the morning of the race. Try to stay away from sugar and alcohol for a few days before the race. Make sure to stay with your regular daily meal plan, do not change anything on the day of the race. Eat about 1 1/2 hours before your heat but not a full meal. You just want some fuel in your stomach for the last half of the race. You should feel comfortable at the start of the race, not hungry, not too full, just right.

During the race:
Make sure you are drinking something that you have been drinking during practice. Race day is NOT a good day to try that new sports drink that you have heard about. For any race under 1 hour I would not recommend using gels or anything like that. After the 1 hour mark you may want some sort of sport gel or other carb replacement depending on your metabolism. As you paddle you burn fuel. If you paddle a long time or paddle really hard you will run out of fuel or "bonk". You need to know your body to be able to prevent that from happening. For me, I take a gel at 45 minutes then every 1/2 hour after that until the end of the race. You should be drinking an electrolyte, carb replacing sport drink during the race. I will give some options at the end of this. For anything under an hour you may not need to drink (know your body). For 1 hour and up I usually drink 32oz. per hour to stay hydrated on a standard southern California day. You may need more or less depending on conditions and exertion level. Keep in mind this works for me and may be different for you. During practice or homework try dome different types of drinks and some different intervals of drinking to find what works for you. On a side note, If you are cramping you need sodium NOW. The powerbar gels with 4x sodium can fix this if you catch it early enough. Take one as soon as you feel even the slightest cramp, repeat every 10-15 minutes as necessary. There is also a product from gatorade if you can find it called gator lytes. If you are prone to cramping these may help.

After the race:

  • Protein within 30 minutes.
  • Lots of liquid, Lots of rest.
  • So you will need meat and beer immediately!!
  • The best advice I ever got for nutrition is this:
  • Know your body, know what works for you.
  • If you feel thirsty it's too late!
  • If you feel Hungry it's too late also!

Some info on products:
Try them all. Buy small quantities of everything until you find the one that works for you. You can go crazy with this stuff. You only really need the basics. Keep your nutrition plan simple, don't let it run your life. Following is a list of products that I have used. You can get this stuff at bike shops, REI, target, etc.

Electrolyte, carb:

Most of these companies make gels and other products as well.

Hope this helps,
Donovan

Subject: Crew Assignment for Crystal Pier

Fun practice today guys. As you know, the crews have now been set. We will be training as crews from now until Crystal Pier. In order for our crews to run as fast as possible and in order for us to have the best racing experiences possible for the first race we need to work to find the best combos and learn to blend. But in order for our crews to reach maximum velocity, crew members need to be present. Don't leave your crew hanging. Put the time in and let's go fast. Remember, the mark of a good paddler is being able to improve whatever canoe he sits in. Make a difference Hanohano.

Tuesday we begin to turn our training up a notch. Please wear a camelback or belt-clipped water bottle as we will begin utilizing "Active Recovery." This means we will not be taking time to hand water bottles back and forth through the canoe.

Congratulations on winning your seats. And nice work in kicking everyone's butts today Kupuna crew. You are a shining example of what happens when six guys do the same thing and work as a single unit. Six Bodies, One mind. Together we run fast.

After further consideration, Scott and I agree that the most malleable and likely to change crew assignments lie in our Novice division. Because yo! u are all still learning and developing your paddling abilities and may improve at differing rates, the below crews are not set-in-stone. Also of note, if we can recruit one or two more committed guys, we can run two full Novice Mens crews.

Huh...

Maybe there's some other Hanohano.

Anyway, great job on Saturday everyone. Our second test was as successful as our first. We saw some serious power output and once again some great attitude, effort and TEAM RECOGNITION. It was nice to see you cheering each other on and challenging one another to excel. Your attitude, willingness to work, and support of one another make it a pleasure for Scott and I to be here. Thanks again to Jerry, Paul, and Gary Bond for steering the heats and thanks to Gary Shaw for helping keep Scotty straight with the timing.

Pretty work on Saturday, Hanohano. This Tuesday and Thursday we have the final test, Seat Racing. We tested for Conditioning with the Fitness Test, we tested for Power with the Tractor Pulls, and now we'll test for Blend with the Seat Races. Come with your 'A' game this week and make a difference in every canoe you sit in. Your personal successes and recognition lead to HANOHANO successes and HANOHANO recognition.

To help Scott and me better prepare and set-up the Seat Races, please let us know in person Tuesday, or preferrably via email sooner, whether or not you are planning on racing the first race of the season, our race, the Crystal Pier race. I will assume that everyone that participated in both the Fitness Test and the Tractor Pulls intend on racing.

Thanks again for your effort and dedication to each other.

I learned a couple of things yesterday.  One, I guess Old Guys really do rule.  And two, fishing lines and hulis do tend to slow you down a bit.

I heard some good ones yesterday, but in case anyone needs any excuses for their performance yesterday, please reference the below list provided by Jerry Franklin.  Please feel free to send any innovative excuses to him to be chronicled for posterity.
To help everyone, especially the coaches, it is suggested that paddlers simply refer to the appropriate number(s) – maximum of two per paddler – when explaining why your time was slower than you thought it should have been.

  1. I used a slow canoe. (Includes all weight, age, design, steering, construction materials, color, light/heavy ama, etc. issues.)
  2. I started too fast (or slow)
  3. The other paddlers started too fast and I couldn’t catch them.
  4. didn’t get a chance to warm-up sufficiently.
  5. I blew my wad in the warm-up.
  6. The seat was too far back and I couldn’t reach the steering pedals.
  7. The boat was too short and I couldn’t stretch out my legs.
  8. My last meal was (Chinese food, Mexican food, dog food, sushi, pizza, too big, too small, a six-pack
  9. I just had wild sex.
  10. I haven’t had sex in two weeks.
  11. I can’t remember when I got laid last.
  12. Honest coach, I’ll drop 20 pounds before the first race.
  13. If I’d known time trials were today I wouldn’t have worked out earlier (or… yesterday, this week, ever).
  14. The course was too long (or short).
  15. Big (or small) guys have an advantage on the one-man.
  16. Tall (or short) guys have an advantage on the one-man.
  17. The wind slowed me down.
  18. The water was dead.
  19. I felt dead.
  20. The current was running against me.
  21. I hit a shallow spot.
  22. I began to see spots.
  23. I caught (kelp, eel grass, fish line, etc.) on my rudder.
  24. My rudder was too long (or short).
  25. I hurt my (back, shoulder, hand, ribs, neck, arm, elbow, wrist, pride).
  26. My boat (or ama) had water in it.
  27. I hulied (pick a number) times.

  29. My training was interrupted by the rain (or…illness, six-man practices, a hangover, a needy wife and/or girlfriend…)
  30. I paddle better when I sit behind someone else.
  31. I have almost no experience paddling one-mans.
  32. My stroke really works well in a 6-man but not on a 1-man.

  39. I was up all night with a sick (baby, girlfriend, wife, dog, cat, dolphin).
  40. I took a bad course.
  41. The sun was in my eyes.
  42. I used the wrong paddle for a one-man.
  43. I thought we had another month to prepare.
  44. I over trained.
  45. I peaked two weeks ago.
  46. My practice time was much better.
  47. Chris was mean to me.
  48. I forgot to drink my supplements.
  49. I had a motorcycle accident last week and I’m still sore.
  50. I couldn’t find my lucky hat.
  51. My shorts kept sliding down.
  52. I had a bad day.
  53. This isn’t a fair way to judge paddling ability.
  54. I’m old and shouldn’t have to do this.
  55. I’m only a second year paddler and shouldn’t have to do this.
  56. I’m a steersman (or stroker) and shouldn’t have to do this.
  57. I’m Hawaiian (or Samoan, Tahitian, haole) and I shouldn’t have to do this.
  58. I’m not slow; it’s just that others are faster than me.
  59. I got caught in Chris’ rooster tail.
  60. My rudder cable broke.
  61. I had a bad turn.
  62. I had to bail water out of the cockpit during the race.
  63. My 2-man partner didn’t show up.
  64. The water didn’t help at all.
  65. I just plain suck.

Please let me know if there are any errors in the recording/ reporting of time.
Great Job. See you all Tuesday.  Please dress warm as we will be on the beach filming and Demoing the stroke this Tuesday.

Subject: Saturday's Fitness Test

HANOHANO MEN:

Please find below current availability for heats on Saturday 04/05/08. If you have not yet signed-up for a heat time you can do so tonight, Thursday, at practice.  After this evening's practice you will have to do so before 9pm Friday evening via email (see below).

A couple of quick points for Saturday:

  1. Please arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled heat so that you can check-in, warm-up, and be ready for your heat start time
  2. We will be running heats on as tight a schedule as possible.  If you are late or not ready you will be bumped to the next heat.
  3. Remember there are borrowed canoes on the course.  On Saturday, rubbing is NOT racing.  Please no bumping or hitting other boats or buoys.
  4. This is a fitness test, not a time trial.  Your finish time is not the only thing that matters on Saturday.  If you spend the whole course cutting guys-off, boxing-out, pushing guys out on the turn, or anything else that would be considered smart racing on any other day, both you and the other guys in your heat will end-up with slower times.  This means you will be seat racing against other guys with similar slow times.  If you work together as a heat to push each other to finish as fast as possible, you will be seat racing for higher seats.
  5. While we have said final time isn't as important as lap time, it is important.  Beating guys by seconds just means that's the guys you'll be seat racing.  Beating guys by minutes means you'll be seat racing for higher seats.
  6. We will need help timing and making sure things run smoothly and on time.  Please hang-out and help.
  7. There are a couple of shallow spots between the island and the road.  Be considerate and give each other room.  Don't bottleneck, or everybody ends-up with slower times.
  8. Watch out for fisherman.  It's our job to avoid them, not the other way around.  This is a public use area and while we expect others to be courteous there may be lines, boats, etc. on the course.
  9. Most Importantly:  We are Hanohano Men.  We are an Ohana.  While we are warriors, we are still brothers.  Remember this while testing.  Don't let your individual ego negatively impact your brother's ability to succeed.  We go faster together than we do individually.

Heat 1 10:30am:

Heat 2 11:15am:
No Loaner canoes available; only 1 or 2 spaces available if using own canoe

Heat 3 12:00pm:

*    The boats that will have the baby amas after the first heat will be the Stingray, Fusion & Huki. After that the Seal is the most stable.

*    I know there are more of you that want to participate. Please email me directly at sixasone@hotmail. com with your name, your age, the heat time, the boat you want to borrow (if available) or whether you plan to use your own OC-1 before 9pm Friday night.

*    Novices if enough of you want to give it a whirl, we'll set up a specific run for just for you.

*    If the late heats don't begin to fill in better, we will consolidate those heats.

*    "Golden Hamsters": I've already included you in the counts and have reserved some spots for you in the first two heats.  Please send me names, ages, and who's in what heat before Saturday.  Thanks.

Don't forget about the BBQ.  Please get money to Grill-master Pete this evening or commit to bring whatever he needs.  There is a great vantage point to see the whole course on the East point above the aquatic center with a nice picnic area.  And this is great opportunity for Scott and me to meet your families and get to know you all a little better.

That's all for now.  See you tonight and good luck Saturday.

From Chris on 4/1/08:

Subject: "Get to the Line Dave!"

Great practice Gentlemen.  There were some real dog-fights tonight and some pretty obvious heart being displayed.  We will continue to ramp-up our conditioning through the month of April.  We should have been working at a 7 (I mispoke when I said 8) on our Perceived Exertion Scale tonight.  Please find below our Perceived Exertion Scale defined:

Hanohano Men's Perceived Exertion Scale

  • Level 1: No exertion at all: I'm watching TV and lying on the coach
  • Level 2: Minimal effort: I'm comfortable and could maintain this pace all day long
  • Level 3: Extremely light: I'm still comfortable, but am breathing a bit harder
  • Level 4: Very light: I'm sweating a little, but feel good and can carry on a conversation effortlessly
  • Level 5: Light: I'm just above comfortable, am sweating more and can still talk easily
  • Level 6: Somewhat hard: I can still talk, but am slightly breathless
  • Level 7: Hard (heavy): I can still talk, but I don't really want to. I'm sweating like a pig
  • Level 8: Very hard: I can grunt in response to your questions and can only keep this pace for a short time period
  • Level 9: Extremely hard: I am probably going to die
  • Level 10: Maximal exertion: I am dead

The Aerobic Zone - 70% to 80% (5-6)

Training in this zone will develop your cardiovascular system. The body's ability to transport oxygen to, and carbon dioxide away from, the working muscles can be developed and improved.  Primary energy sources include recently stored carbohydrates and fat reserves.

The Anaerobic Zone - 80% to 90% (7-8)

Training in this zone will develop your lactic acid system. In this zone, your individual anaerobic threshold (AT) is found - sometimes referred to the point of deflection (POD). During these heart rates, the amount of fat being utilized as the main source of energy is greatly reduced and glycogen stored in the muscle is predominantly used. One of the by-products of burning this glycogen is lactic acid. There is a point at which the body can no longer remove the lactic acid from the working muscles quickly enough. This is your anaerobic threshold (AT). Through the correct training, it is possible to delay the AT by being able to increase your ability to deal with the lactic acid for a longer period of time or by pushing the AT higher.

The Red Line Zone 90% to 100% (9-10)

Training in this zone will only be possible for short periods. It effectively trains your fast twitch muscle fibers and helps to develop speed. This zone is reserved for interval running and only the very fit are able to train effectively within this zone.

We will be working at these different levels throughout the season depending on what we are attempting to accomplish during a particular piece.  Please familiarize yourself with the scale so that you can maximize your workout by participating at the appropriate workload.

Next, please see below what I have so far for Fitness Test Heats:

Heat 1 10:30am:

Me, Lance C., Rich H., Landon, Chris H., Steve L., Aron, Jay G., Lois D., Steve J.

Heat 5 1:15pm:

Dave B.

(loaners available: Hurricanes, Stingray, Fusion, Pahoa, Seal, Vantage)

  1. The boats that will have the baby amas after the first heat will be the Stingray, Fusion & Huki.  After that the Seal is the most stable.
  2. I know there are more of you that want to participate.  Please email me directly at sixasone@hotmail. com with your name, your age, the heat time, the boat you want to borrow (if available) or whether you plan to use your own OC-1.

  4. If the late heats don't begin to fill in better, we will consolidate those heats.

That's all for now.  Come on out and earn your seat.  Prove it to the guy that thinks he should be sitting where you're gonna sit that you earned that seat.

Good Luck,

-CH

From Chris on 3/26/08:

Good Practice last night, gentlemen. Good effort. That effort is what we will build on throughout the course of the season. We will each actively chase perfection, attempting to become great paddlers. And in becoming great paddlers, we will make a positive impact in every canoe we sit in, making each boat run faster by our efforts and helping our Hanohano brotherhood to become better by our influence. Together we go fast. Alone we go nowhere.

Okay, just some quick reminders and updates. Please be sure you have your calendar cleared for and are prepared for the following:

  • April 5th OC-1 Fitness Test
  • April 12th OC-6 Solo Tractor Pulls
  • April 15th & 17th Seat Races
  • Here’s where we stand for the April 5th Fitness Test. As of right now I have the following canoes committed for Hanohano Mens club-use the day of testing:

  • 1 Hurricane (mine): good for smaller/ lighter guys and guys with some experience (although we can rig it pretty stable for inexperienced guys)
  • 1 Seal (Thanks Steve!): really stable design; good for inexperienced guys (Steve said this boat is huli-proof)
  • 1 Fusion (Thanks Landon!): good for bigger/ taller guys (Outrigger Connection boats like to run with the ama light due to their big volume; this might make an inexperienced paddler uneasy)
  • 1 Pahoa (Thanks Chris!): Good all-round boat, not much of a learning curve
  • 1 Stingray (Scotty’s): the seats Scott has for this thing are really deep, so this one is for the tall guys (or at least guys taller than me, but I did race my first OC-1 race on it and medaled.)
  • I may have access to a Fuze as well, but we’ll see. If anyone else is willing to lend their canoe that would be helpful. (Again, I understand if you’re apprehensive.) I’d like to get 8 or more canoes per heat, so we can get everyone done in 5 or fewer heats. Obviously, those of you that have canoes are welcome to use your own.

Les Hopper and I will be setting-up the course this afternoon and I will give you the final distance, etc. We are shooting for three loops, totaling around 3 miles. At this distance, we should be able to run heats every 45 minutes. If we start the first heat at 10:30am and run 5 or fewer heats, we should have everyone done by 2pm. We will not be running OC-6 practice on the 5th, but guys waiting for their heat are welcome to hop in an OC-6 together to warm-up. The Fitness Test will serve as our team workout for the day. You are not required to stay for everyone’s heat, but it would be nice to see a solid show of support for each other. We go faster together than we do individually. As I said if we can get an impromptu barbeque going, it might be a nice opportunity for guys to get to know each other and their families.

Baby Amas: Lance has donated what we believe will be enough foam for three of the amas and has taken the lead on this little project. I need to pick-up some aluminum pipe for the single iakos of similar diameter and thickness to OC-1 iakos. Does anyone have any scrap aluminum pipe sitting around? We probably need 3 x 3ft. If need be, I can purchase it somewhere. Does anyone have a pipe bender or pipe cutter? Once we have them we can affix them to two or three of the donated boats for the day.

Once I have a better estimate of the number of loaner canoes, available baby amas, estimated course duration, and the estimated number of participants, I’ll set-up a sign-up for the different heats so that guys that want the added security of the baby ama can sign-up for one in an available heat.

That’s it for now. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or assistance by phone at (858) 692-7611 or via email at sixasone@hotmail.com.

Until then do your homework and have fun doing it. This is going to be a great season.

    Aloha,

    Chris

Again Great Practice tonight, Gentlemen! Remember if we have six guys doing the same efficient stroke at the same time with the same effort, it's easy to move a canoe and make it run fast. Let's continue to improve together, working with like-minded singular focus toward perfection."

That being said, as I mentioned on the beach I need help with a few things to ensure our testing next month runs smoothly.

    1) Fitness Test:

  • a) I need help constructing the "training wheel" or "baby" amas. I know I can't send the pics through the Yahoo group, but you can find pics and a description of Chris OK's design at http://www.ocpaddler.com/node/3290 Can someone please take the lead on this? Suzanne said there were discretionary funds available in the budget for small projects like this. 3 or 4 would be helpful.
  • b) Also, like I said, since we'll be running heats through the morning on the 5th, I'd like to make it an opportunity for previous years Hano Hano guys and their families to meet and get to know the new Hano Hano guys and their families. The fire pit/ grill areas over by the point above the aquatics center would allow spectators to see most of the course I'm considering. Can someone please take charge of setting-up a grill and rallying the troops?
  • c) I Know that this can be a sticky question to ask, but are there any of you that are willing to make your OC-1 available for other guys to use that don't have their own boats? My hurricane will be available, but we'll need a few more willing guys.
  • 2)Tractor Pulls:

  • Paul, Gary B. and Jerry Franklin: Would you guys be available to steer the tractor pull boats? I'd like to run 2-3 lanes simultaneously so that we can get through everybody without spending the whole practice doing it.
  • That's it. Remember the upcoming tests are your chance to prove where you belong. Control your own destiny. Do your homework and come out prepared to secure your seat. None of the tests are mandatory for seating, but the more data there is on you, the more proof there is that you earned your seat. Good luck gentlemen and thanks in advance for your help.

    From Scotty 3/18/08:

    Dues:

As announced earlier at practice and in an e-mail, dues are $185.00 for returning HH paddlers and $200 for new members. I will be collecting checks only, NO CASH, at practices.

    Jerseys:

I will be asking your size and sleeve preferences at practices or you can e-mail the information to me. One jersey and a tank or a tee (not sure which) will be included in your dues. Any additional jerseys will cost $25.00 each. These jerseys will have the men's new design and will be our race jersey this year.

    Practices:

In the next few practices, we will be ramping up the intensity. Some important dates for you guys to mark on your calendars:

  • April 5 - Fitness Test on an OC-1
  • April 12 - Tractor Pulls
  • April 15 & 17 - Seat Races
  • April 19 - Crews announced
  • April 5th Fitness Test: The fitness test will be on flat water in the back bay of our current site. This test will consist of two or three loops on a course to be determined. This test will be used to determine your endurance and fitness level. For those of you that have not been on an OC-1, do not worry, we are coming up with a design (baby ama) so you will be able to paddle an OC-1 with confidence. This is not a time trial, and we are not going to be setting crews based on how you finish. It is just information for Chris and I to see your endurance levels at different stages.

April 12th Tractor Pulls: The tractor pulls will be done in a six man canoe and will be approximately 1/4 mile and we will be running two to three lanes at the same time. This will take place in the small cove by the entrance to Fiesta Island. The tractor pull will consist of you and a steersman that will not be helping you paddle. He will just be steering the canoe. This test will reflect your power output.

April 15th & 17th Seat Races: Seat races will be done with 6 paddlers in each canoe. We will be using a GPS to determine the speed of the canoe and the distance the canoe goes in a specified timed piece. We will be shuffling paddlers in and out of canoes so you will never know when it's you we are seat racing. This will help us, the coaches, determine your ability to blend and make a difference within a crew.

April 19th Crew Announcements: All crews will be announced for the Crystal Pier Race. This will give you time to work and blend with your crew in order for each canoe to have their best race possible. These crews will be just for the Crystal Pier Race. Everyone's improvement will dictate each and every race so that by the time we compete at the Ironman Championships, we will have the fastest crews possible competing.

None of these tests are mandatory for seating, it is just more information for Chris and me to gain knowledge of you as a paddler.

Remember, Chris and I are setting the crews, but you really have nothing to prove to us, you need to prove it to your fellow paddlers as to why you are in the boat you are in. So remember to go out and do your homework and get your fitness and endurance levels up so you will be ready for these tests and the up coming season.

    From Chris 3/16/08:

Great practice again today Hanohano Men.

Special recognition to the Dragon Boat guys who doubled-up. And thank you to those of you who were on the beach and ready to go at 10:30 for your patience.

I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention, but we’ve had five hulls out on the water for every practice except one. That says something about the effort and commitment you all are putting forward this season. It’s very encouraging and Scott & I have noticed and are impressed.

Keep the momentum going. Continue to work on your technique during practice, perfecting the Hano Hano Men’s stroke. But remember, your “Off-water” homework is equally as important. If you haven’t begun to do so already, it’s time to build that aerobic base. Starting in April we will begin focusing on race conditioning. Don’t let all the effort you are putting into mastering the stroke be for naught because you won’t be in proper conditioning and therefore unable to keep-up once we “kick it up a notch”.

Scott & I believe in and are teaching an efficient stroke. If this stroke is coupled with a solid fitness level, we will be as strong on the last stroke of the race as we are on the first. Not only will this make races more “pleasurable” (or at least less painful) it will make the Hanohano Men’s fleet run fast.

There are several different types of aerobic endurance training - each with a different, specific outcome and suitable for different events and sports. What I briefly touched on this morning was what is commonly referred to as Long-Slow-Distance training or Steady-State training.

As you would expect this type of training is typical of an endurance athlete. Intensity is usually less than 70% VO2max, or equivalent to about 80% maximum heart rate. Duration should be near to race distance or rather race duration. Intensity for long, slow distance endurance training is often gauged using the "talk test” whereby the athlete can hold a conversation without being too winded but is still forced to breath through both nose and mouth.

Adaptations to this form of aerobic endurance training include improved cardiovascular and thermoregulatory function, improved mitochondrial energy production, increased oxidative capacity of skeletal muscle and increased utilization of fat for fuel, which spares muscle glycogen. (I’d be happy to provide additional explanation or sources of info for any of you that might be interested). Anaerobic or lactate threshold is also likely to improve with a body better able to remove lactate. In short, it will improve your endurance.

At this stage in our training, we should be getting in 2-3 days of LSD (long slow distance) in addition to our regularly scheduled Tues/Thurs/Sat practices.

So, turn in your homework. You don’t have to prove it to Scott or me. You have to prove it to the guy who wants your seat. You don’t owe it to Scott or me. You owe it to each other to be the best, Hanohano.

Hope to see you all Tuesday.

    Aloha.

    From Scotty 3/16/08:

    Aloha, everyone.

    First topic, dues.

Dues are due April 1st. All returning HH men, your dues are $185.00, this includes a race jersey and a tank top. For all new HH men, and novice, your dues are $200.00, this includes a race jersey and tank top and a $50.00 lifetime membership fee. If you wish to pay your dues at practice, I will only take a check made out to Hanohano. NO CASH!

    Next topic, jerseys.

We will be ordering HH yellow jerseys from Patagonia. We will be putting the men's new logo on these jerseys. I need everyone to give me their sizes and sleeve preference (long or short). This is the jersey that you will receive when you pay your dues. Any additional jerseys you wish to purchase, will be $25.00 each.

    Next topic, Upcoming

April 19th we will be moving the canoes to Santa Clara Pt. That is a scheduled practice, so, with the women's help, we will move all of the canoes over to Santa Clara Pt.

April 26th is the Holiday Bowl Outrigger Challenge. We will need everybody's participation.

May 10th is the Crystal Pier Race hosted by Hanohano. If you haven't already signed up to help, please do so. We will need everybody's participation to help out.

May 24th is the Luau, another big fundraiser for Hanohano. Again, we need everybody's participation.

Please mark these dates on your calendar. April 26th and May 10th and 24th are the big money makers for Hanohano and are the reasons why your dues are cheap and you receive a race jersey and a tank top.
